VG Review #3: Balloon Fight
This game is a butt kicker. I love it. So much fun.
If you couldn't already tell from the picture above, this game is for the NES.
Also, if you couldn't tell from the picture above, you're a dude wearing a helmet with 2 balloons tied to him.
Yep. That's only the start of the awesomeness.
As the cover implies, this game is 2 players, but even playing alone is a bunch of fun. Your mission is to kill all other people in the game. If you're playing 2 players, you can even kill your partner, but all you need to do is obliterate all enemies. Each stage layout is different, but the main goal is the same: pop all balloons. You yourself have 2 balloons on your back, but all enemies have one, which makes your job a whole lot easier. Fly around with the A and B buttons. You can take 1 hit before you die. Once one of your balloons is popped, you need to keep your guard up. Another hit will kill you. But that's ok because you have 2 extra lives. But anything past that, and the game has no mercy. You start all over.
During each stage, the game gives you a head start and the enemies just sit there for a while. You can use this opportunity to kick some enemies off the screen to increase chances of survival. Don't wait too long though, or they'll pump up their balloons and fly around trying to pop your balloons with their noses. Yeah, by the way, the enemies in this game look like mosquitoes. Speaking of which, I got 2 bites. Ow.
To kill an enemy, just pop a balloon. Oh wait, that's not enough. Once you pop the enemy's balloon, they float down on a parachute. Stomp on the parachute to deliver the death blow. If they reach solid ground, they will sit there for a few seconds. If you wait too long, they pump up their balloon again and pursue yours.
As far as I know, this game is endless, meaning, it will loop as long as you play. Once you reach the last stage, you'll go back to the first. Also, in between several stages, you get this bonus round or something. There are 4 pipes that spit out balloons randomly. Just pop them for extra points.
This game really kicked my ass. It shouldn't be that difficult right? Just popping balloons? But really, this is one of the most challenging mothers I've ever played. Even though the AI looks kinda dumb, they will gang up on you if you don't start getting rid of stuff. I haven't gotten that far in the game and it's the first game I've reviewed that I haven't finished. But it kicks so much ass that I don't care.
The music kicks ass too. Classic sounds from the NES time.
Definitely play this if you are bored, it'll give you plenty of entertainment for hours.
