Welcome to the Hell Show, with your host, RedAndBlueTheme. I just finished watching FLCL for about...the 4th time? I thought I'd write about it today.
So...what can I say about FLCL...? FLCL is a very unique anime. It is also known as Furi Kuri or Fooly Cooly, but I just refer to it as FLCL. It's about a boy who meets some crazy girl and things start coming out of his head. I told you it was unique. It also has one of the most kick-ass soundtracks to an anime, by The Pillows. I think that this is a series that definitely requires a second watching; you won't understand it the first time through. Not to say that FLCL is a bad anime though - it's actually one of the better ones that I've seen. FLCL is very short; the shortest anime I've ever seen at 6 episodes. In fact, it's so short, I can give you my opinions on each episode.
01: Furi Kuri
The opening episode. If this is your first time watching this, be prepared for some of the crazy shit that comes flying at you. When I first watched this, I thought it would be an ordinary, decent anime. But after about 5 minutes into the first episode, my expectations were deader than shit. This episode was a brilliant way to start off a series that only gets crazier and crazier. You are introduced to Naota, a middle school kid (I think) that is bored with life. He then meets someone that changes it all up, Haruhara Haruko. She is the one that is responsible for all this craziness. To start it off, she makes a pair of robots come out of Naota's head. But enough spoilers. On to the next one.
02: FiSta
In my opinion, this episode just barely touched the creepy side near the end. This one is all about arson, hence the title: Fire Starter. Not a whole lot to say about this one, but it IS a continuation of the chaos from episode 1.
03: Maru Raba
By the way, every episode, something new comes out of Naota's head. Well, first it comes out like...partly. Like a bump. Then near the end of the episode, it grows into something and actually comes OUT of Naota's head. FiSta had one too, I just didn't mention it. In Maru Raba, cat ears come out of his head. This is probably the 2nd funniest episode in FLCL, but I'll get to the 1st in a sec.
04: Furi Kiri
The first time I watched this episode, I thought the people who made this were on crack. I did not understand any of it. By the way, I should probably say now that most of the stuff in FLCL does not make sense. It's just made for entertainment. There is a storyline, but it's surrounded by nonsense. Which is good. Anyways, on to Furi Kiri. This part is probably the most confusing episode and even after watching it a 4th time, I STILL don't get it. Until after I read a summary on the Internet. You know what, that's what you need. After watching all 6 episodes, go to Wikipedia or something and try to make sense of it all. Either that, or go watch all 6 a second time. It doesn't take THAT long.
05: Bura Bure
This is my favorite episode in FLCL for a couple of reasons. (1) The first 5 minutes are just kick ass. It's super nonsense, but better nonsense than #4. (2) They shoot guns like crazy in the first part of the episode which makes it even MORE chaotic. (3) ...Actually you know what, I'll stop there. I don't want to ruin it for you if you're going to watch it. Whoa I just felt that feeling like when you're on a cruise ship. You know, the lurching of the cabin. Whatever. Oh yeah, I almost forgot the South Park reference in this episode. It made my day.
06: Furi Kura
The last episode, unfortunately. Not much to say about this one either. If you sat through the first 5, then this one won't be anything new for you. And I can't tell if that's a good or bad thing. You decide. Which means you have to watch it.
There are some things that I don't like about this though. One of them would be the difficulty I had following the storyline. I don't have a HUGE problem with it, but I wish that it would be a little bit more coherent. I like the story, don't get me wrong. Another is the characters. Some of them just were, weird. Not that anything in this anime was normal, but I think the characters could have used a little work. Not all of them; the main characters were awesome. Just...some of the other ones.
Overall I'd say this anime is pretty damn unique...and GOOD. It has an interesting story and some awesome music. In fact, music is such a big part of this, that they use guitars as weapons. Fuck yeah. However, its genre may not be suited for everyone, due to the random craziness and chaos, and the hard-to-follow storyline. Let's put it this way. If you can put up with me, then you can tolerate this. No, I'm just kidding. But if you have some free time, definitely try watching this. It'll knock you off your ass.
Storyline: 7/10
Characters: 7/10
Mood: 9/10
Uniqueness: 10/10
Music (just for this one): 12/10
Overall: 8/10
